In 5-1 section, Prof Ju-En Chien( 簡汝恩 老師 ) talks about the wholesome mental factors in Yogacara school, there are eleven wholesome mental factors, such as faith, shame, embarrassment, absence of greed, absence of anger, absence of delusion, vigor, serenity, non-carelessness, equanimity, non-harmfulness. These mental factors free the mind from the affliction.
5-2 section, Prof Ju-En talks about sraddha(faith 信), which is good mental factor, according to Cheng Weishi Lun(成唯識論), sraddha is to accept,delight,and wish. Faith has powerful work in actuality, merit, and capacity. Faith should be fully accepted in astitva(real existence), guna(merit), sakti(power of karma), phala(fruition), catvari aryasatyani(four truths), ratna(three treasures).Cheng Weishi Lun(成唯識論)metaphor how udakaprasadakamani(water-purifying pearl 水清珠) to purifying water. No faith can pollute the mind and support laziness. Faith is a deep conviction in the Buddha’s teachings.
5-3 section, Prof Ju-En talks about hrī(Shame) and apatrāpya(Embarrassment).
How they define in Cheng Weishi Lun(成唯識論). hrī(Shame) is based on internal own strength, the power of the dharma, and reverence and respect. Reverence and respect also refer to moral paradigms and goodness.The definition of apatrāpya(Embarrassment) are worldly opinion, worldly condemnation, worldly aversion. Therefore, shame is internal values, personal morality, and internal motivation. Embarrassment is external judgment, societal disapproval and social influence.
5-4 section, Prof Ju-En talks about Virya(Vigor), the definition of vigor in Cheng Weishi Lun(成唯識論), Diligence is vigor which include courage and tenacity, metaphors of vigor is donning of armor, deepening practice, not willing to become inferior, not willing to retreat, not willing to become satisfied.Another wholesome mental factor is Apramada(non-carelessness), it also refer to heedfulness and conscientiousness. Apramada(non-carelessness) is nature to avoid and to cultivate, it also has conjunction with vigor and three good roots.
5-5 section, Prof Ju-En talks about serenity and equanimity. Praśrabdhi(serenity 輕安) in Cheng Weishi Lun(成唯識論), the definition is to lighten, be serene, to harmonize, dullness, concentration to the body and mind. Upekșā(equanimity 行捨), the definition in Cheng Weishi Lun(成唯識論) is vigor and three wholesome roots. Equanimity and non-carelessness can resemble each other. Serenity and equanimity both cultivating a balance and peaceful mind.
